Each person selected had a few paragraphs about their influence written by recognizable names, including US president Barack Obama, who wrote about Pope Francis, IMF managing director Christine Lagarde, who who wrote about Federal Reserve chair Janet Yellen, and actor Lupita Nyong’o, who wrote about director Steve McQueen.

Bey’s honor comes one year after her superstar husband Jay Z also made the cover of TIME‘s Most Influential issue.
Internal covers inside the magazine feature actor Robert Redford, gay NBA bench rider Jason Collins and General Motors CEO Mary Barra.Other honorees include Pope Francis, Hillary Clinton, government whistleblower Edward Snowden and music producer Pharrell Williams, among others.
