EDDIE MURPHY HINTS AT COMING TO AMERICA SEQUEL

Eddie Murphy is working on a sequel to Coming to America.

Twitter went into meltdown after the comedian's official account posted a picture of Vanessa Bell Calloway in character from the original 1988 film along with the caption: 'Coming to America sequel?"

The tweet and his whole account have since been removed from Twitter.

While the tweet appears to have been in error, or perhaps just too early, Eddie is in early writing stages of the project, TMZ reports.

In any case, even preliminary chatter of another film triggered a number of enthusiastic responses, with notable names such as actress Holly Robinson Peete and NFL alum Shawne Merriman reacting to the vague tweet.

The original film told the story of an African prince named Akeem (Murphy), who resists overtures of an arranged marriage with flawless Princess Imani Izzi (Calloway) to seek love on his own.

He and his best friend Semmi (Arsenio Hall) eventually wind up in Queens, New York, with plenty of fish-out-of-water humor from the comedy master Murphy.

It was a massive hit when it hit theaters in June of 1988, grossing more than $288 million worldwide. It garnered two Oscars, for Best Costume Design and Best Makeup.

Murphy and Hall played a number of personas in the film, with Eddie famously schticking as a barbershop regular named Saul.
