From its contentious title—which alludes to a comparison between gun violence in Chicago and war zones in Iraq—to director Spike Lee’s contested talk show comments during the press tour, the movie Chi-Raq has been trailed by controversy ever since it began filming on Chicago’s South Side last summer.
Opening in theaters on Friday, the modern satire loosely based on the Greek comedy Lysistrata has drawn some of its fiercest criticism from Chicago residents who say it trivializes gun violence and perpetuates a stereotype that the source of the city’s violence is its predominantly black neighborhoods.
All in all, Lee answered about 10 questions on Twitter and said that Amazon is currently working on a plan to direct proceeds from Chi-Raq to benefit the youth of Chicago. When asked what he hoped to accomplish with the film, Lee said, “The number 1 priority is to save lives.”
