The judge deferred her final decision on Funches-Wade’s custody rights until July 9.
The temporary ruling comes less than a week after Wade and the Miami Heat won the NBA title against the OKC Thunder in Miami.
Funches-Wade was arrested and charged with child abduction for allegedly failing to return their sons, ages 10 and five, to Wade in a timely manner over the Father’s Day weekend.
Wade was in Chicago today attending the custody hearing. He is seeking a termination of Funches-Wade’s visitation rights, or visitation only with supervision.
Funches-Wade invoked her Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination during the custody hearing. Her attorney, Michael Haber, said Funches-Wade might have hurt her defense against the criminal charges if she testified today.
Many Twitter.com users expressed disappointment in Wade’s handling of the child custody situation with his baby mother. They understand she's struggling with the break up so why would he take.
